Cautions to Observe When Using Laxatives
Not All Laxatives are Safe for Long Term Use
Because stimulant laxatives can promote dependency, these laxatives
are not considered safe for long term use. Dry fiber laxatives, often recommended with medications that induce constipation, can create an impaction if not taken with enough fluids or when taken with diuretic medications. Do not take dry fiber laxatives at night. Take them with plenty of fluids. And be watchful for signs of impaction.
Drug Interactions and Product Labeling
If you are taking other medications along with laxatives, ask your doctor, nurse, or pharmacist about potential drug interactions and side effects that can occur when they are taken together. Do not rely on product labeling. Laxative labels do not provide comprehensive information regarding drug interactions.
Monitor Weight Loss
Laxatives can interfere with nutritional uptake and fluid retention. The result can be unwanted weight loss and declining health. Drink plenty of fluids. Nutritional supplements may be necessary.
Monitor BM Activity
After emptying the bowel using a purgative laxative, 3 or 4 days may pass before a normal BM will occur. Using laxatives during that same 3-4 day period may be counter productive to resuming normal bowel function.
Monitor Side Effects and Quality of life
It is important to monitor laxative side effects - such as dehydration. This is especially important when other medications are also being used. Laxative side effects such as cramping, BM accidents, oozing fecal matter, fecal odors, and painful skin breakdowns, commonly associated with laxative use, can impact quality of life.
Tips About Stool Softeners
Stool softeners are often prescribed along with medications that can induce constipation. However, stool softeners should not be used longer than two weeks. After 10-14 days, the body develops a tolerance. The agent is no longer effective at softening stool. > The Limits of Stool Softeners
Can I Avoid These Problems?
Avoid taking laxatives at the same time you take your medication. Do not take laxatives without consulting a healthcare professional. If a laxative is prescribed for you,
ask about your alternatives.
