bulk and improving stool quality in 3 important ways:

1.
Insoluble fibers hold moisture in stools which helps to keep stools from drying out and makes stools easier to pass.

2.
Insoluble fibers provide volume which exercises colon muscles.

3.
Insoluble fibers provide weight which stimulates neural and muscular actions speeding stool transit.

About Insoluble Fiber

Insoluble fiber is made up from the structural material of the cell walls of land plants. It accounts for ½ the weight of the plant and is among the most abundant fibers in nature. It consists of cellulose, hemicellulose and lignin. While they can "hold" fluid, insoluble fiber does not dissolve in water (some hemicellulose fibers are water soluble). In the human gastrointestinal tract, fiber passes through mostly undigested until it reaches the colon where dietary fibers are slowly and incompletely fermented by intestinal microbes.
